| Automated music analysis is a multidisciplinary ongoing research topic. It addresses at a broad range of scientific areas, including cognitive sciences, psychology, applied AI and, of course, musicology. An effective segmentation of a music piece is essential for extracting information from the score. Current AI development show a reproduction of human mental process for music analysis is too sophisticated for a machine, therefore a rule based model is preferred. Usually this kind of models are based on variational calculations. Using the Matlab MIDI toolbox, developed at University of Jyvaskyla, a rule based segmentation algorithm based on the work of Cambouropoulos E. (A Formal Theory for the Discovery of Local Boundaries in a Melodic Surface, Proceedings of the III Journees d' Informatique Musicale, Caen, France, 1996) and examples from baroque, classical and romantic piano repertoire are proposed. The algorithm use a MIDI notation to extract pitch, rest duration and note duration. By using three arbitrary coefficients it is possible to built a vector (boundary strength)corresponding to the energy level of a score, in analogy with the potential energy, defined as difference between an arbitrary level of potential function in a conservative field. The following equations show the concept of the boundary strength vector.

Further development include the analysis of beats and basic harmonic analysis (bass in root position) and an integration with a recently developed algorithm that find the match level between notation and performance, based on the work of Palmer & van de Sande, 1993. This integration, with the help of well trained performers, will lead to a better understanding of music style, and to a wide range of applications, including an improved style-based automated composition, automated error detection in scores and reconstruction of incomplete scores. | comments: Leave a comment |
